These paintings are so cool -- from the other side they look ridiculous but from the right angle they look completely three-dimensional. My question is: how can this be done on a canvas?

Do you know who the artist is? Cause I know Julian Beever is one guy thats kinda well known and AWESOME.
HERE is a website (possibly his?) with a bunch more of his stuff.
I've tried doing this before for an art class and its INCREDIBLY difficult. I have so much respect for how realistic the 3-D effect is in a lot of them.
