Great great quote. But, I think it is not simply that we should paint with a child's eye (though that is a good piece of advice!) I think what Degas meant is that the more you understand about painting, the harder it gets to make really good, really new and fresh paintings. You see the inherent difficulty it presents, the challenge gets steeper. As a novice you more often just allow yourself to have a lot of fun with the activity of painting, but you may never produce anything that an audience will care about.
